New Years Resolutions 2015

Can't decide whether resolutions should be lofty and ambitious or realistic and achievable - so I drew a cartoon instead.

Santas Revenge

What do you tell your children who think Santa has delivered their presents when there aren't batteries included in with your electronic presents?  Is he negligent, was there an elf who needs disciplining at the North Pole?  Here's an alternative scenario from a slightly bad Santa.

A Frosty Start

Every year I hastily scribble some cartoons in friends Christmas cards here is one that combines Frosty the Snowman and Frozen's Let It Go.

The Battles of Black Friday 2014

This is for the cartoon competition with the theme Film Lines but it relates to the unbelievable scenes in Tesco stores (including one I've been in) where people engaged in hand to hand tussles for discounted televisions.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer - unanswered question

Watched the new The Force Awakens trailer and the main thing that stuck was me was what was the point of the T-shaped lightsaber...

I tried googling Sword forms to see if this was a part of any ancient swords and while there are jaggy guards they still don't look like this and their purpose was to help protect hands.

Here is an interesting page on sword forms.

EDIT: I've had a couple of responses including in the comments here about how this is just a hilt or guard like a normal sword would have or saying all the answers can be found by googling crossguard lightsaber.  So after further internet research heres what I've learned:

  • If this is a guard to protect hands (which may be useful given that Luke and Anakin both lost their hands in lightsaber duels) then that crosspiece should either be light too (see this Techcrunch article) or has to be made of some material that can't be chopped through (see this piece in the Washington post)
  • This is a rare design and we haven't seen before or have we?  There is some talk about one  being wielded by a Jedi called Roblio Darte in some Clone War comics but from reading the Wookiepedia article that one seems a slightly different design with another blade coming off at a 45 degree angle.
  • The blades coming out a 90 degree angle to the sword still seems a bad idea to me more of a nuisance to the wielder than one who is being attacked.  As a defensive measure maybe you need a hilt made of some impenetrable material, as an offensive weapon those extra blades should be angled forward.
  • I wonder if anyone can come up with an analogous traditional sword with a long 90 degree hilt with blades at the end of the guard not just spikes where the guard is used in attack.

Cartoon for this week's comp.  Been a while since I've done any Star Wars related gags.

Hangman

I have often wondered about the origins of Hangman the game and why in an age where capital punishment is frowned upon this is still something we teach our kids.  Still it gave me an idea for a cartoon competition.

According to Wikipedia and other google searches Hangman has it's origins in the Victorian age.

Song of Solomon

I did some cartoons on Song of Solomon mainly around the imagery in chapter 4.  As well as the colour ones here are few black and white gags.

Strictly Come Dancing 2014

BBC's Strictly come dancing is back.  The weekly dose of "celebrity" dancing acts as a countdown to Christmas where you have to endure hours of people who couldn't really dance before you get to the favourites some of who are pop stars or work in showbiz and could probably dance a bit before.

This is my second strictly cartoon and like the first it is for the CCGB competition.

Nessie Decides

The Loch Ness monster defecting to England has been done to death so I've come up with another angle for this week's caption competition.

Bigger than bigger

What slogan do you come up with when you're Apple and you're launch a big phone, bigger than your other phones but not the biggerest phone (the Samsung Galaxy Note is more bigger).  The "bigger than bigger" slogan made me laugh and stopped me falling asleep while I listened to the new U2 album they released for free.

Independence Debate Alternative Format

Regardless of what side you were on you have to admit this would be a better format that listening to two old Scottish men shout over the top of each other for an hour and an half.  There was long periods of the BBC debate I literally couldn't tell what either side were saying except that Alex Salmond's shoutyness seemed to be marginally better that that guy from the muppets...

Who is Guardian Witness IP5228505?

Today I had one of my cartoons published in the Guardian G2 section as part of a Guardian Witness assignment.  Thanks to my not paying attention I used a 2009 account that had anonymous username IP5228505 so great marketing opportunity squandered!

It is on their website here http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2014/aug/04/readers-cartoons-in-pictures-darth-vader.  You should check out some of the other gems from Rob Doyle, Royston, Chris Williams and others.

And here is the original again for your enjoyment from an earlier CCGB competition and blog entry.

Wimbledon 2014 summary

After the quarter final exit of Andy Murray against Grigor Dimitrov I drew this cartoon, and to think I was looking for a little joy from sport after the England team's world cup performance.

Here's some Andy murray cartoons from happier times (with colour!)

Braveheart 2014

Reading some of the twitter reaction to JK Rowlings announcement particularly this charity tweet  or the comments section of any independence story makes me worry about the current tone of the debate. - have we descended to the most juvenile form of politics? (and both sides are to blame)

Batman vs Superman

Drew this cartoon for a competition because hey who doesn't like drawing superheroes.  With the title of the Batman vs Superman movie being released this week (Dawn of Justice) I am intrigued with what they will do with this superhero duel but seriously Batman vs Superman there is only going to be one winner the one who actually has superpowers not Ben Affleck.  Unless they decide not to fight each other but team up to defeat some other villains but they wouldn't go for anything that obvious would they?

Glasgow 2014 website wait

Here's a true story wife was in website queue for tickets for 6 hours watching a sign that said "Wait time approximately 60 minutes"  got in did a search got a crash had to go back in queue saying "Wait time approximately 60 minutes".  It's like some crazy infinite loop.

This is a rework of a previous epic wait cartoon I drew http://www.cartoonsidrew.com/2013/04/your-call-is-important-to-us.html
